Genetic Engineering: Playing God?

http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/End%20of%20the%20World/Genetics%20Nightmare/playing_god.htm

Through out time technology has taken over the world and how things run around the world. Technology is mostly a good thing but like everything else… When it comes to excess and to obsession with it, it can become a bad thing.
This article caught my attention because my dad has a friend that works in the genetic engineering field and there is always a debate whether he plays God or not. It is amazing how the human being came up with the idea of messing around with living creatures’ genes and DNA that they can change things the way God has created them.

“Genetic engineering primarily involves the introduction of genes containing DNA (deoxyribo-nucleus acid) procured from humans or animals into cells of bacteria, yeast or other animals. One of the outcomes is termed ‘Transgenic Animal’.” “Once the transgenic animal is produced, its suffering just about starts… for example, non-porcine genes have been added to pigs, producing animals with gastric ulcers, live and kidney disorders, lameness, damages eye-sight, loss of co-ordination, sensitivity to pneumonia and diabetic conditions.”

Only by reading this phrase above it is clear that this process is unnatural and it goes against Gods purpose on earth. God has created each leaving creature on earth to be perfect and he has a purpose in creating each species unique and in its own way. Human beings have no right to come and take that power from God in the attempt of creating totally new creatures that never have been seen before. Even genetically modifying food is against Gods purpose and it is not what God wants for us to be consuming. All this processes people are coming up with have its effect that will affect everyone sooner rather that latter.

Genetic Engineering violates one of the themes of Catholic Social Teaching that is “ Life and Dignity of the Human person”. This type of engineering goes against life and dignity because its inhuman to be creating creatures that are not normal and that will grow up with defects because they are not part of the perfect plan God has for his creation.

“and God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature AFTER HIS KIND, cattle, and creeping things, and beast of the earth AFTER HIS KIND: and it was so.” Genesis 1:24

In my opinion, only God is allowed to create new creatures and play with DNA and genetics. Us as humans we have no right to be messing around with this serious topic. We are not supposed to be allowed to “play God”.

  1. I really liked this article and definitely agree with what you're saying. Not necessarily the God aspect of it, but it it us unnatural and not only harms the creature being genetically modified, but us, as well. Especially when it's genetically modified.

I remember learning in my Others class about genetically modified food and how there's huge debates on whether it's healthy or not. Personally, I choose not to eat genetically modified food just because it's not natural and nobody knows exactly what effects the chemicals used and such will do to your body, which I find the most disturbing about the whole "genetically modified" debate.

  2. You know I really agree with you as far we shouldn’t play God and keep trying to recreate things that are already made, but somehow I feel that we have to find some kind of balance in there. The balance is to allow experiments to continue because we all benefit from them. We have found cures for polio, tuberculosis, chicken pox, and smallpox; which has now been completely eradicated from the earth! None of this would have been possible if scientists were not allowed to experiment.
I do feel that God gave us our intelligence and we should seek to better mankind and our environment, and not hurt it. But everything that exists has a good and a bad side effect. Too much ice cream makes us overweight, but in moderation it is enjoyable.
