Teacher Creating Social Change

http://blog.en.idealist.org/

This article certainly grasped my attention because I find it amazing how some teachers are very passionate about their job. They are willing to do anything for their students. Jose Vilson is an everyday teacher from New York City. But what makes him so special? Rather than just giving a lecture and having students write down notes, the students are the ones doing the majority of the work. The students are doing most of the talking during class. I think Vilson made a very intelligent move on trying to make each individual student a leader. I completely agree that students need to start developing intrinsic motivation in order for them to become the leaders of their own life. The students should be the ones pushing themselves into doing better in school.

Vilson is just an amazing person for educating an amazing group of students, and also for staying committed to them. The area where he works at is not the safest. The area where he teaches at is known for its incriminating behavior. Everyday he goes to work, he is placing himself at risk. Jose Vilson certainly is a person that is creating social change in his community.

  1. I think this is an awesome story. Even to this day, we have University students that refuse to speak in front of their class. This is a remarkable strategy by the teacher to implement the comfort and importance of being a “leader.” The first anecdotal step to success or social change is letting your voice be heard.

  2. I believe is extremely important for us to have that confidence upon ourself to speak in public, be a leader and just be confident of ourselves. By doing that with the students I believe he is making them feel like they have a voice in class, therefore it helps them with their self-esteem. I feel happy that there are still persons like Vilson that goes out of his way in his job.

  3. This story was very interesting. I know that I can be shy when I get up and talk in front of the class, so knowing that there are actually people out there that care makes a difference. There are teachers that do not really care what the student has to say so that may make the students nervous when speaking in front of people. Vilson is doing a great thing by making his students into leaders.
