Women and Combat

Women are not allowed to take part in combat roles!!!  I have to say that my initial feeling is “about time”.  On the other hand, I cannot say that I don’t have concerns especially when it comes to hand to hand combat.  Anyone can be good with a gun, man or woman.  On the other hand, can we expect even a large and strong woman to carry an injured soldier to safety if the need dictates?  I have family serving in military overseas and from personal common sense let alone knowledge I know that survival in intense life or death situation, as a common occurrence, may depend on some carrying you out to safety.  I would want my family member to have someone with him that has the physical ability to do so.  I don’t think that even a strong woman could carry any of 200 pound plus cousins to safety.

While I can understand the right to equality that women want, laws of nature dictate otherwise in regards to activities where a certain physicality may be required.  When lives are at stake one must put the ego aside in order to accomplish a common goal.  I man is allowed on a woman’s soccer team or a women’s volley ball team.  The same rules that apply with this analogy should apply even more too combat situations where lives are at stake.  This is not to say that women do not have a role in the military.

  1. I am currently a woman in the military. I am actually a mechanic, which is also primarily a male career field, but there are a few females that can and do handle and the position very well. In my shop, I have had several of the males I work with tell me that they would rather have me over several of the other males because I can accomplish my work on the same level and a lot of the times at a higher level. I do strongly feel that some women have the ability to handle combat roles.

What is the difference between a woman firefighter and a woman combat veteran? Both women are required, through physical fitness testing, to be able to carry 200+lbs in high stress situations. It isn't about the amount of weight you can carry it is about the position you carry them in. If you can't complete the physical fitness test you cannot work in that specific position. Not all males can qualify for combat position.

There are some women that are not made for combat, but the physical fitness test and the training will weed those out before they ever get there. If those women who do make it through training are truly there to serve their country and are fully capable, why stop them?
