Muslims in Office

http://www.onislam.net/english/news/americas/460914-california-muslims-make-political-history.html

As a political science major, I have heard a million and one reasons why people do not get involved with the community politically. Of all these excuses, one of the ones I have gotten is for religions reasons. Turns out many people do not vote and do not try to get into politics is because the nation, right now, is very Christian based.

Now as a disclaimer, I am in no way saying the nation being predominantly Christian is a bad thing, or even something that needs to be addressed, I simply believe that the nation being Christian is in no way an excuse to not voice yourself in politics.

The article I found is really about the actions those who are not the "norm" can take in order to be involved. 28 Muslims were elected into the California Democratic Party this month. Since the events of September 11th, American thoughts towards the Muslim community have been not the best. After a decade, things have been better between the two groups, but who would imagine that the people of  a state would elect not one, but 28 Muslim officials.

I took this article as a personally boost for myself going into the political world as a person not in the "norm", I find it hard to pursue anything publicly, but seeing so many people out of the "norm" accomplishing so much gives me the confidence I need.

  1. Great article, I am a very open minded person and have many friends that are Muslims one of them was even at one time Hamas during the Lebanese civil war in the 80s. We have had several conversations about this topic and other related to Muslims in America. In human history Christians have many times been the ones kill over religious beliefs; radical Muslims (which are the vast minority) are doing no different than Christians have done in the past. The difference is that we are now in a modern world. Because of more radical Muslims feel they have the duty to impose Sharia law where ever they live as part of their duty as being good Muslims they will always be viewed as trying to push their ways on us and consequentially disrespecting the American way.

Whether or not you agree with separation of church and state there is no denying that Christianity provided a base or moral foundation for the America and our ways. Just as we should respect Muslim ways in Muslim countries they should also respect our ways. A problem arises because while many Muslims are respectful of this, many of them are also not. Muslims as a whole are peaceful but they do not or do not have the ability to keep themselves in check by controlling the radical element.

Even some of my Muslim friends admit that they themselves must bite their own tongues when in their home countries. As a human being I have the moral duty to distinguish from the lovers and haters of any given group. It is hard not to generalize as it is within our nature. If some of my best friends were not Muslims I would find harder to do.
