On
the other hand, the US Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who addressed a
conference before Biden, said that he comes from a violent neighborhood in the
South side of Chicago and therefore he is very focused on tackling this issue.
It is very important that we, as citizens see the importance of this issue and
reflect upon it. Do we really want teachers to be carrying guns in school and
show students that that’s the only way they will be safe? We cannot think for a
second that by carrying guns/weapons we are protecting ourselves. I think that
we are indeed pushing criminals to a point where they will be more cautious and
try other methods to get what they want. We should be focusing on having
professionals (officials, guards, cops) doing the “security job” not handing
out guns to the public so they can be safe. Also, it isn't just about the guns, it's about taking action, it's about taking control. What do you think?

Hey Sandy, I love this issue… Not because I am for or against banning of guns, but because I love listening to the debates. I am a pro-gun owner but I also am completely for background checks and making sure that people owning guns are of sound minds.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree however that we should ban specific weapons. I can attest to using an AR-15 for recreational use and hunting. We actually have 2 but it is not a gun I use for home defense. I have a handgun (also know as a semi-automatic pistol) in my bedside table that I am certified to carry. I can do much more damage at close ranges much faster with a pistol, which is another fact that many people forget. What exactly is it that I can do with an AR-15 that I cannot do with my pistol? I am actually faster at ejecting and reloading my pistol magazine than I am the AR.
As far as teachers with guns, people have to remember that we wouldn’t just be handing teachers weapons. They would have to go through training classes and licensing processes just like the rest of us already do. Then they would be required to carry the gun concealed, meaning the students would never see the weapon. The students would not even know the gun was in there. Think about it…. How many cops would we have to hire for each school to keep our children safe? There are 1700 children in my son’s current middle school and they have 1 officer. Do you think he could get all the way across the school in time to stop a crazy person from killing children? I would be perfectly okay with my son’s teacher protecting him from that crazy person by any means necessary.
This issue is not only complex, but it is complicated by the fact that measuring soundness of mind is not always reliable. The worst of teachers molest students, and although they might not shoot students, that's a clear indication that a gun could be misused. Crazy or not, people can be driven to kill other people-whether it's from hatred, government mandate or plain fear. That's why I, personally, find it ridiculous to disseminate more guns to more people. Even if we trained teachers to handle guns professionally, I feel that would not be an effective enough deterrent. Furthermore, it would not change the fact that teachers are not day to day militants nor officers. An event such as a school shooting is not always predictable, and not an occurrence that happens under controlled circumstances by any means. Hand an afraid person a gun, and it doesn't change the fact that he or she is afraid. All it does is make two people deadly, with innocent bystanders between. I am not in favor of letting school teachers freak out and start a gun fight with someone ready to kill. It will also make them the first target. And if school shootings are no longer effective to those mad enough to take part in the first place, then school bombings will be.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather guns be taken out of the equation entirely. At this point, I doubt that's plausible. But I would not put my kid in a classroom with a teacher owning a gun; I wouldn't sign the paper work (yes, students would know that their teachers have a gun, concealed or not).
I fall under the same headline as most people in Texas. I completely understand background checks, this being noted the 2nd amendment is meant to protect us not just from criminals but from tyranny within the government. Let's just face the facts; our government does not exactly have a good track record of shooting straight. Examples are the both wars in the Iraq and Kuwait, not to mention many events that our media (which is not free) does not report on. I have several close friends in the Special Forces and they all the same thing, “what we hear and what we ‘Know’ to be true is completely false”. We must always have a means to keep the powers that be in check. Before JFK was assassinated he gave us a warning not more than a few weeks before his death. (Funny how he was assassinated after making a challenge to our real enemies; within and outside of our own government) Don’t forget it was not soon after that his brother also was assassinated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvSD6If3zds
ReplyDeleteMakes you think, can we trust our government? I highly recommend you listen to the attached YouTube audio file. Being associated with many people in the Special Forces as stated above what you think you know, is not what is going on. Issues with our government using deceitful methods to sway American public opinion go back to the Spanish American War and the sinking of the USS Main when we used the sinking of the Main to start the Spanish American War while looking for a reason to conquer the Philippines because we wanted a stepping stone to trade with China. http://toto.lib.unca.edu/sr_papers/history_sr/srhistory_2004/glazier_phillip.pdf
These are just a few known and documented instances, what of the others that no one knows about? And these people want to take our guns? REVOLUTION!!!!!
