Immigration Reform

The issue of immigration reform has never been a hotter topic than it is today. Mention this subject in a class and it will usually lead to a heated argument on both sides. Both sides of the argument have great points and are never afraid to voice their opinions. This issue will certainly be around for a long time until the government finds a way to solve the problem.

One side of the argument is to send all the illegal’s back usually to Mexico. Although Mexico, is where the majority come from, it is not the only country losing people to the United States. You will hear statements like they are taking all of the jobs or they don’t spend the money they make here in the US. Another one of the issues is that they get cash jobs and don’t pay taxes. This is a valid point and one that certainly needs to be fixed. People also complain about illegal’s getting social services without having to pay taxes. Hospitals can’t refuse treatment and the welfare system is full of illegal’s taking advantage of the system for free.

On the other hand many feel they have the right to be here just like everybody else. Why are the current citizens today the judge and jury on who can come in and who can’t? Most of the jobs these people do are low skilled that most Americans refuse to do anyway. The only thing they feel they are guilty of is trying to find a better life for their family.

My personal feeling is that we are supposed to be the melting pot and immigrants are what made this country great. What needs to happen from the government is that they need to find a way to make it more easier for the illegal’s to get working papers so that they can work and pay taxes. In the end, if you are NOT a Native American then you are an immigrant yourself.

  1. Manuel, this is a very good issue we face today and I'm glad you talked about it. I definitely agree with you on that immigrants make this country great because nowadays we have a lot of immigrants succeeding and contributing to our economy and growth as a society. Yet and unfortunately, some argue that some of the worst criminals are immigrants who shouldn't be granted any rights. But let's not forget that we are all humans, we all make mistakes and not everyone (who's immigrant) should be blamed and punished for a few other's actions. I wish we could have a clear solution to this but we don't. I hope one day we can come into peace with this issue and solve it in a way that will benefit us all, not only those against immigration reforms.
