This is a shame, where do you draw the line in judgment of
this vet that killed two other vets that were trying to help him recover from
PTSD. From one perspective the shooter
had just gotten out of a mental ward and had been on suicide watch. What were these guys thinking putting a gun
in his hand at a shooting range? I have
first-hand knowledge with PTSD and it can affect people all their lives, this
being said, PTSD is a disorder imposed upon a human that has experienced
traumatic events. Based on that I’m
hearing about this guy his issues went beyond PTSD and into the realm of mental
illness. While the two other vets may
have experience with PTSD they may not have had proper training with mental
illness. Putting PTSD together with
someone who is inclined towards mental illness makes for a serious issue. Most people that suffer from PTSD do not go
out and start killing people. Assuming
this guy suffers from mental illness some leniency may be shown. This being said, I do have some conflicting
feelings about this topic. Is PTSD a
mental illness? I don’t think so; it’s a
disorder that may trigger mental illness.
If PTSD alone caused this I think this guy should be fried; I do however
have the inclination that some type of substantial mental illness played a
factor in this shooting. This along with
the fact that this man did serve our county makes me feel empathy for the
shooter.
I sitting here right now writing about this event but I’m
not blind to fact that this event in itself is an effect not a cause. This being noted it brings to light that this
country is short handed in the field of mental health issues. We need to provide care to people that are
mentally ill, if not because it is the right thing to do than because we as
society are now facing the ramifications of adequate mental health care.
