Annexing Hawaii was Manifest Destiny at its worst. Hawaiians need to seriously re-debate and vote on the state issue. Are you better off being a state? or would it be in your best interest to enter into a commonweath with the US? or maybe embrace complete independence? I don't think it is too late to undo what was done - correcting injustices and having Hawaiians creating a political environment which works for Hawaii. Democracy and the USA will always be a work in progress, always needing to be calibrated and tweaked for the better.
Small note on the neo-royalists who want to return to the Hawaiian Kingdom - they tend to propose a race-based return to the Kingdom, where in actuality it was founded by a multi-racial coalition in 1819. Furthermore, the Kingdom they so adore as actually replaced by the Republic of Hawaii, which survived independently for 5 years (including putting down a rebellion possibly armed by the US), until a more friendly administration came to power and allowed annexation (which had been pursued since 1854 by King Kamehameha III, who sadly died before finalizing it).
The trick here is that Hawaii is a Banana Republic, controlled by a political patronage system that has been dominated by one party for over 50 years. This system is entrenched into jobs, business, and government, and the brave souls who buck the system often suffer for it.
