The gay community has been highly talked about in today’s
media, but I have not heard anything about it being talked about in the NFL
until I read this article. Chris Kluwe, the punter for the Minnesota Vikings,
expressed how he felt about professional athletes who are concerned about the
possibility of sharing a locker room with a gay teammate. Kluew clearly
expresses his feelings when he says “Grow the f**k up.” He makes a good point
because they are grown men and they are worried about getting checked out. San
Francisco 49ers player Chris Culliver, does not agree with gay teammates in the
same locker room. “I don’t do the gay guys, man. I don’t do that. No, we don’t
got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.”
Reading those words I felt disrespected and I am not even
the one he was talking about. Culliver is so worried about being judged about
having a gay teammate that he is willing to give them up. There are a lot of
children that look up to NFL players, and I know that society is slowly
becoming use to the gay community. Kluwe is a supporter of LGBT, which was
something interesting because my group for class is doing our project gay and
lesbian society. Chris Kluwe is not the only NFL player that is in support of
this group-Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, Cleveland Browns linebacker
Scott Fujita, and New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski and many
others.
The person has to accept the player as their teammate
because they will be working together. You cannot control how a person lives
their life, only how they act on the field. A gay/lesbian person is a human
being meaning that they should get the same respect as anyone else.
